Chasing Light: My Favourite Photographs of Sunsets and Sunrises

There is something timeless and deeply moving about the moments when the sun meets the horizon. Whether it is the end of the day or the beginning of a new one, these scenes hold a quiet power. For me, photography is not just about capturing what I see. It is about preserving emotion, atmosphere, and memory. And nothing brings that to life quite like a sunset or a sunrise.

Sunset on the West Coast of Scotland

The west coast of Scotland is a place where nature feels raw and poetic. The coastline is rugged, the sea is restless, and the skies are constantly shifting. One of my favourite photographs was taken near Arisaig, where the sun slowly disappeared behind the Isle of Eigg. The light turned golden, the sea shimmered, and the clouds glowed with shades of orange and violet.

Scottish sunsets are unpredictable. The sky can be heavy with clouds one moment and then suddenly burst into colour the next. The way the light interacts with the landscape, from the hills covered in heather to the quiet lochs, creates a scene that feels ancient and alive.

Sunrise Over the Gulf of Thailand

On the other side of the world, the Gulf of Thailand offers a very different kind of beauty. I remember waking early in Koh Samui, the air warm and still, the ocean calm and reflective. As the first light appeared, the sky softened into gentle tones of peach and lavender. The water mirrored every colour perfectly, creating a sense of peace that felt almost sacred.

Sunrises in Thailand carry a quiet grace. The world wakes slowly. Fishermen head out to sea, monks walk silently through the streets, and the day begins with a sense of calm. Capturing that moment, when everything is still and full of promise, is something I will always treasure.

Why These Moments Matter

Sunsets and sunrises remind me to slow down. They are brief, yet they happen every day. Each one is different. Each one is a gift. Whether it is the wild beauty of Scotland or the gentle charm of Thailand, these photographs are more than just images. They are memories of places that touched me, moments that grounded me, and light that continues to inspire me.
